How we score and rank landscapers

Every company on Landscaper Index receives a score from 0 to 100. The same formula is applied in every city and every service category, so a score of 85 in Calgary means the same thing as a score of 85 in Halifax.

The formula

SignalWeightWhat it measures
Adjusted Google rating55%The star rating, blended toward a neutral average when a business has only a handful of reviews. A 5.0 from four reviews should not outrank a 4.9 from two hundred.
Review volume30%How many reviews the business has earned, on a logarithmic scale so that growth matters most in the early range.
Profile completeness15%Whether the business publishes a phone number, website, address and photos, and whether there is enough public information to describe its work.

Ranking order within a list

Lists for a specific service (for example, snow removal) are ordered by score and by how central that service is to the business. A specialist with a slightly lower overall score can rank above a generalist for its core trade.

Editorial review

Scores are a starting point. Before a list is published, an editor checks each business is active, actually serves the city and offers the service in question. Businesses with clear signs of fake reviews are excluded.

Updates

We re-check ratings and review counts regularly. Each ranking shows the date it was last updated.
